Modern Theatre & Jazz

Combining Jazz, Street, Musical Theatre, lyrical and contemporary

If you go to the theatre to watch a musical – or watch dance routines on X-Factor you will be watching Modern Theatre dance. This style is fast, fun and funky and uses travelling steps, high kicks, leaps and turns which all need strength and flexibility.

We follow the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Modern Theatre syllabus which incorporates a huge range of dance styles into its examination syllabus. Modern Theatre Dance defies a single permanent definition. This is largely due to its ability to adapt, develop and evolve with the changing fashion in dance. The ISTD syllabus gives an excellent grounding in all of these dance forms and has recently been updated so the students love it!  The syllabus is excellent preparation for the big jazz routines we dance on stage.

  • The Modern grades go from Primary to Grade 6 and are designed to be fun and encourage dancers’ imagination.
  • The jazz awards are done to chart music and are just plain funky.
  • After the grades, the vocational grades (Intermediate, Advanced 1 & 2) are designed for those looking at becoming professional dancers.

We combine our tap, modern and jazz lessons into one class. For beginners these are on a Saturday morning and then they move to Friday evenings for the seniors.
